Two Stages Of Gum Disease
In its earliest stages, gum disease is called gingivitis. Symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. It’s a good idea to visit our Bordentown, NJ office if you have tender gums, even if it’s not time for your regular dental exam, so we can clean your teeth and remove the bacteria-laden plaque that causes gum disease.
If gum disease is not addressed in this early stage, it can become periodontitis, or advanced gum disease. You lose bone around your teeth and your gums begin pulling away, forming “pockets” where more bacteria can gather and put your teeth at risk.

If you have periodontal disease, we’ll suggest a two-part gum disease treatment called scaling and root planing. Our team will:
- Thoroughly clean away plaque both above and below your gumline
- Smooth your tooth roots, which helps gums more easily attach to your teeth
- Provide prescriptions for antibiotics and mouth rinse that clear away any remaining damaging bacteria
An anesthetic gel is placed on your gums to remove discomfort, so injections are rarely necessary.
